Arrest of two TV presenters in Kabul

Reporters Without Borders is concerned about the arrest on 23 March 2009, Kabul, Fahim Kohdamani, journalist and host of the private television channel Emroz and inquiry of Alamzai Ajmal, a journalist with the private TV channel Ariana TV .

“We call upon the Afghan authorities the immediate and unconditional release of Fahim Kohdamini. Again, the Afghan government does not respect freedom of the press and decide the arbitrary arrest of journalists who have done nothing wrong,” said the organization.

Fahim Kohdamani was arrested by order of Attorney Kabul for distributing music on Emroz and for hosting an entertainment program “Biya bibin wa” ( “come see”) on the same channel. The journalist was accused by the prosecutor to have aired programs’ anti-Islamic “and” vulgar “.

This arrest is related to the fact that the channel has broadcast music on the day of the celebration of the death of the third Shiite Imam, 7 January 2009. Since then, the clergy sent several letters to President Karzai criticized the failure of “religious values”.

Najeebullah Kabuli, Emroz director, told Reporters Without Borders that he believes they are political issues and in particular the intervention of neighboring countries, which lie behind this case. Indeed, other television broadcast music and Indian series, but were not worried.

Ajmal Alamzai, presenter of the show Didadgah on the private TV channel Ariana TV, was also arrested March 23 by the management of national security, for having broadcast a report containing a series of interviews with former officials Taliban in Kabul in which he asked directly by telephone response by a spokesman of the Taliban. He was released on March 23 around midnight.

“This program deals with the declaration of Barak Obama on the ‘dialogue with moderate Taliban’ and did not endanger the security of Afghanistan. But the question is illegal because the journalist was almost kidnapped in the street and nobody has been notified. Additionally, for any arrest, notice of the Commission on Audit faults of the media is necessary, “said Ehsanollah Aryanzai, director of Ariana TV, RSF.
