KABUL, Afghanistan (Jun 03) – Medics from the Provincial Reconstruction Team Feyzabad, Blackhawk helicopters from Bagram and surgeons from Masar e-Shariff joined forces to provide medical assistance and provide airlift to a local national 8-year-old boy, June 01.
An inhabitant of Feyzabad arrived at the PRT field camp looking for immediate medical support for his young son who had apparently fallen from a tree.
Medics reacted quickly and ascertained that the child had sustained a serious head trauma. With darkness of the night looming and the PRT being located in a mountainous area, calls were made to ISAF HQ to coordinate support for airlift and treatment of the boy.
Within minutes, Bagram Air Field (Regional Command East) agreed to assist and sent two U.S. Blackhawk helicopters. The helicopters landed on the unlit Feyzabad airfield, picked up the child and transported him to Masar e-Shariff for immediate neurological surgery.
The surgery lasted for seven hours but was completely successful as the child is listed in stable condition and is anticipated to be going home within the next few days.
The treatment of this child adds to the over 370 local nationals that ISAF has provided medical assistance for since the start of 2008.
