Marines secure new areas in southern Helmand
KABUL, Afghanistan (June 2) – ISAF U.S. Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) and British forces of Task Force Helmand recently launched a new operation in southern Helmand.
To rid the area of insurgents through the capture of a series of identified enemy strong points and defensive positions, British forces of Task Force Helmand pushed south from one of their forward operating bases to secure routes west of the U.S. Marines’ positions. Marines then used the newly-secured British position to push into new areas of Garmsir district, previously held by insurgents.
In the weeks since the U.S. Marines started operations in southern Helmand,
insurgents have demonstrated a persistent and concerted effort to resist the advancement of troops and to hold ground in the district. ISAF forces have consistently encountered, and defeated, disorganized resistance in more than a hundred engagements with insurgents in the form of small arms, indirect fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
U.S. Marines are here to secure routes through the district to enable the extension of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
