SAHIL awarded Newspapers, Volunteers

The role and importance of media increased manifolds in this era of globalization in bringing the issues of human rights and child protection into the limelight.
Child sexual abuse is a public health epidemic inflicting long-term serious health effects on its victims, destroying individuals and families. Yet it’s largely ignored in our society. Civil society has an important role to play for protection of the children rights. Sexual abuse against children is a menace should be condemned at all level by every school of thought, social organizations and individuals in their capacity.
So, that such mean exploitation could be eradicated fully from the society”.
SAHIL exclusively works for the eradication of such abuses aiming at providing a secure atmosphere for children to grow mentally and physically in their nature potency.
Such programs of SAHIL are carried through advocacy, support system for children and awareness of body protection enhancing legal and psychological services for the victims of CSA.
SAHIL’s ‘Cruel Numbers 2010 report’ revealed after monitoring more than sixty newspapers that a total of 2252 children were sexually abused throughout the country during last year.
SAHIL is to ensure that not even a single child is subject of any abuses.
To encourage the media personals to handle the issue of child sexual abuse in a more meaningful way, SAHIL started to appreciate the contribution of newspapers because of standard and sensitive reporting on the child protection issues. To appreciate hard work and dedication of Newspapers and Volunteers, SAHIL held Child Friendly Newspapers and Best Volunteer award 2010 ceremony at Marriott Islamabad.
Hundreds of participants from various national, international organizations, civil society and media persons attended the ceremony.
Advisor to Prime Minister, Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali was the Chief Guest while His Excellency, Norwegian ambassador to Pakistan Robert Kvile was the Guest of Honor on the occasion.
The award for Child Friendly Newspapers in national category went to Daily Khabrain (Multan), Daily Waqt (Lahore) received the award in Regional category while Daily Sobh Karachi won award for local newspaper. Special Mention Award went to Rafiullah Mandokhail from Zhob Balochistan for taking active part in disseminating masses developed specially for children about body protection.
Special certificates were given to Daily Khabrain Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Daily Express Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Daily Insaf Lahore, Daily Tameer-e-Sindh Karachi/Sukkur, Daily Kaawish Hyderabad and Daily Leader Lahore.
In the special mention category, one volunteer from each province was selected to acknowledge their efforts towards the goal of SAHIL. The volunteers who were awarded in this category were Mr. Waliullah Shah from Noshehra KP, Irfan Joyia from Bahawalpur Punjab and Syed Muhammad Ali Shah Bukhari from Khair Pur Mirs Sindh.
Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali appreciated the role of SAHIL in “highlighting a social evil which is often fuelled by public silence in a society like ours”, adding “we must no longer remain silent” on CSA issues.
Norwegian ambassador to Pakistan Robert Kvile believed that Pakistan was a country having a wide gap of “haves and have-nots” however he was of the view that “media can help in shaping the positive attitude” in public regarding CSA.
Chairperson SAHIL Khawar Ansari explained that “SAHIL is the only organization in Pakistan that works exclusively on the issue of child sexual abuse and its mission is to develop a protective environment for children free from all forms of violence. It was established in 1996 as an NGO to ensure the protection of children.”
Ex. Director SAHIL Manizeh Bano shed light on the good side of the cruel crime by sharing a true story of child abuse in which the victims were convicted for 25 years.
