KABUL, Afghanistan (March 08) – An injured Afghan boy has been given medical treatment at an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base near Shin Kalay, Nad-E Ali, and another boy died of his wounds following an insurgent attack on ISAF troops March 4.

ISAF soldiers conducting a routine patrol in the Shin Kalay area of Nad-E Ali, central Helmand, came under fire from inaccurate small arms fire from several different enemy firing points. ISAF troops responded with small-arms fire and two mortar rounds in self-defence to cover their safe withdrawal.

Later that day, local men brought two children to the nearest ISAF base; one had minor injuries and was treated by the ISAF Doctor before being released into his father’s care. Tragically, the second boy died of his injuries before reaching the ISAF base.

“This is another instance of the tactics used by the Taliban, who deliberately target ISAF patrols from heavily populated areas,” said Commander Paula Rowe, Task Force Helmand. “Tragically, children were again caught up in a Taliban attack and suffered as a result.”

ISAF regrets any injuries caused to civilians. ISAF forces take every precaution in order to prevent civilian casualties while at the same time taking appropriate measures to protect themselves when threatened.
