ISAF troops teach Afghan families honey cultivation

KABUL, Afghanistan – French troops and local people of Goldarreh district, Kabul province celebrated together July 16 the completion of an agriculture course given to families in need.

Led by the French civil-military assistance team, with the collaboration of the French embassy and local representatives, the project’s aim was to provide the means to produce honey and to allow the families to financially support themselves.

Two weeks ago, the local malek, or traditional chief, selected 15 families to attend 10 days of instruction with French embassy technicians. After 40 hours of training, students acquired the basic means to produce, extract and sell honey on their own.

The chief of the French battle group, Colonel Olivier de Cevins, and local representatives attended the ceremony, which included the presentation of 60 hives and production material to the families.

The honey produced by the four hives given to each family will provide an estimated income of $1,200 annually, which is about one and a half times the average annual salary in Afghanistan.
