Pakistan & its Educational institutes

One of the major differences between humans and animals is that we seek knowledge and we constantly learn and understand the world around us. This process of learning and understanding has helped humanity a great deal in so many ways. We educate ourselves in order to have a better understanding of our surrounding and to make best use of the environment.

Education has been a very essential part of the different civilization of the world in historical perspectives. The world has witnessed the seeping away of knowledge that has crossed the boundaries of the different regions and made a world like a global village in recent times, all it was done by the untiring efforts of mankind that has been imparting valuable contributions in different walks of life especially ‘Education’.

In the Quran, ALLAH summons people to ponder and inspect the signs of creation in their surroundings. The final Messenger of ALLAH, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), also encouraged people to obtain knowledge. He insisted that it is our duty to seek out knowledge. In the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) we read:

“Seeking of knowledge is incumbent upon every Muslim”
“Acquire the knowledge and impart it to the people.”

Every person who investigate the design and synchronization of the universe, living and non-living objects, and judges and explores what he observes around him will come to know ALLAH’s superior wisdom, knowledge, and endless power. The concept of education in Islam is not only getting decent earnings but practicing it in real life for the betterment of the others. ALLAH tells Muslim to look and ponder on the world. ALLAH says in Quran:

Do they not look at the sky above them? How we have made it and adorned it, and there are no flaws in it? And the earth- We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and produced therein every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs)- To be observed and commemorated by every devotee turning (to God). And We send down from the sky rain charged with blessing, and We produce therewith gardens and grain for harvests; And tall (and stately) palm-trees, with shoots of fruit-stalks, piled one over another. (Surah-Al Qahf: 6-10)

That is why early Muslim theologians were great scientists as well and they gave the basics of the modern science in the form of Algebra, Astronomy etc. Just the invention of Zero alone brought revolution in mathematics.

Quran provides complete way of life to the Muslims and following the teachings of Quran is the real way of eternal success. In the twentieth century, due to colonialism and Western influence, Muslim parents concentrated on imparting only Secular education to their children. The children who were not fond of learning were sent to the Islamic School or Islamic Madrasas. Due to which Muslims kept on getting weaker day by day and Muslims lost their glory in every field and we lacked and lacking intellectuals who are like Ibn Khuldoon, Ibn Batoota, Khwarizmi, Jabir Ibn-Hayan, Al-Kindi, Al Razi their alike among us who could truly work again for the revival of Muslims.

We have divided Islamic education and scientific education when in reality understanding this world includes Islamic education and is exactly what ALLAH has demanded us in Quran again and again. In Quran it is said:
Those who remember God, standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: ‘Our Lord, You have not created this for nothing. Glory be to You! So safeguard us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surat Al ‘Imran: 191)

Allah demands us to ponder on the creation. We need to hold the Islamic values tightly in order to get stronger again. For this purpose the educational institutions should provide religious as well as modern scientific education with a great and peaceful environment according to our core values, being Muslims. This will pave way to forge robust and balanced society members.

As Education is said to be the foundation of a country which brings progress, social prosperity and economic wealth. Pakistan is said to be a third world country, in order to progress and stand among the developed countries, a proper education system is required. Education helps in maintaining a prosperous healthy society but the education system in Pakistan is so badly split in the name of status, class and caste that it is beyond belief. One of the major Problem in Education system in Pakistan is that there are different system prevailing. This discrimination is a very negative effect as it creates class difference.
Universities have little research going on. The concept of a good university for students is that they will get good job. There is no development going on in universities. All of the major breakthrough and inventions happened in universities in west, but Pakistani universities lack this miserably.

As a case study, I will talk about one of the most Prominent and world-recognized university which is, International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). This university is considered to be the back-bone of Ummah. Students from almost 60 countries conduct studies in different fields at IIUI.

Before my arrival to this university, when I was living abroad, my family forced me to go Pakistan and conduct studies in International Islamic University, as it possesses world class education facilities, Teaching staff and the brilliant environment which leads students to discover ample apart from studies. The most important and appealing thing was of having segregate education.

It has been 3 years that I am conducting studies in IIUI, so far I have observed lots of Good things as well as bad things. One of the worst things about this university is Dirty Politics of students groups. Students’ Number one priority should be to get a good education. This does not mean to say Students shouldn’t be involved in politics, but there is a very elongated way to go and to some extent a student union isn’t a bad idea, But mixing poor students up with serious political factions often leads to fervent youths being practically used for the gains of a few nasty people. Too often we have seen young and decent students often very clever ones beaten and even killed by rival political factions or even police for being activists. So the same is the case with IIUI, where you find various groups supported by different sects in order to pursue their diabolic plans by involving the young lot.

2nd thing is that the lack of Proper Teachers in recent times. Many of the departments are being dominated by different groups of Deans, Heads of Departments and teachers, who are always plotting against each other and this plotting wrecks the bright future of students. Professionalism does matter; therefore the administration must provide professional teachers of each subject and shall hold at least M.Phil degree with couple years of teaching experience and all the university departments should be extricated from such bad-eggs who not only ruin the future of the students but also astray students too.

As this university is Semi-government and it is funded by many Muslims and Arab countries, lots of money were poured into the hands of corrupt people who were and some are still incumbent. Millions of university money has been taken by the corrupt authorities, and the best example is Transport section where millions are lost every single month and nobody knows where they have gone.

But a part of all these negativities, still this university holds a very solid and prominent position among the Muslim and non-Muslim Countries. IIUI had produced some very great scholars who are now serving their own respected nations in different fields. Most of the graduates of IIUI are now working on very prominent positions inside and outside the country. From the country where I belong to (Afghanistan), many ministers, deputy ministers and other high dignitaries are have been the graduates of IIUI.

It is the most reliable and trustable university, where every respected family sends it’s offspring to it. Out of 22000 students, More than 10000 females’ students are studying here, which gives you an idea about how this university has been trusted by people of 60 countries by sending their daughters to learn in a very Islamic and learning environment. There are always plentiful international seminars, workshops arranged by every department in order to enhance the skills of the students and it indeed plays a very vigorous role in students’ career.

In conclusion first I would say that there is need to be more research work and development like in the west. We must adopt good from west and rejects what’s bad and un-Islamic. In this case, Islamic university is the only university that keeps scientific and other worldly Education a part of Islamic education.
Second point is that, other universities must learn from IIUI and make Islamic education and secular education one. There is no divide; scientific education is a part of Islamic education.

There is so much knowledge in this world and we have learned so little and we have a long journey ahead. Education makes us closer to ALLAH as we realize the perfection and insignia in every creation.
