The Afghan Marshall Plan for Reconstruction

Due to the three decades stretched and continues war, Afghanistan today is in a disastrous situation. On one hand there lies a poor economy and an obliterated infrastructure and on the other hand people are dying because of war and hunger. Moreover, the widespread land mines, continuing civil strife makes the Afghan state of affairs shoddier. Thus by looking at the current situation of Afghanistan, one can say that Afghanistan is in no better of state of affairs than of Western Europe after the end of the Second World War.

After six decades where is Western Europe Now? How much is it different than the Western Europe of the late 1940s? Measuring the difference between the Western Europe of 1940s and 2010 becomes an easy task because of the great amount of improvement that has occurred from then on till now, whether its infrastructure wise, economy wise, governance wise and so on.

Let us have an eye on what made Western Europe progress to such an extent?  First and the most important reason was the Marshall plan where chunks of money were poured in to the region for its economic growth, and secondly, that how all of the Western Europe came together jointly and worked for their peace, progress, prosperity and opulence. Mutually they set for themselves goals of long terms and short terms to be achieved, and here they are today.  Victorious!!!

Where is the Marshall plan for Afghanistan? Do we have to expect some foreign donors to come up with the Afghan Marshall Plan? Does it have to be in monetary terms? These questions need a serious attention. But what I think is more important than every kind of Marshall Plan whether it is monetary or nonmonetary, is about forgetting the previous differences and coming together on common grounds and setting ourselves goals of long term and short term to be attained.

Remember, the only difference between Afghanistan’s current situation and of the Western Europe of 1940s could be a higher literacy rate of Western Europe at that particular time. The people of Western Europe understood the importance of education and thus paid serious attention to it. Therefore, one can say education played a major role in developing the state of affairs of the Western Europe.

At this instant, can education be the Afghan Marshall plan? If the answer is No, then it should be marked wrong, if yes, it will not be controversial. Of course its results will not be shown immediately but will be long lasting and desirable ones.  As a result, my recommendation to the Afghan authorities is to keep an eye on the importance of education because in a long run this is a Marshall Plan for you, for us and for Afghanistan. After you realize that education can be the Marshall Plan for Afghanistan, then why not do something about it? Boost the educational institutions within the country along with enhancing its quality. Along with this protect, and support  Afghan Scholars abroad from incursion of other factors who oppose that education can serve  as the Marshall Plan for Afghanistan.  Because, in a long run quality and quantity of education will make things smoother towards a brighter Afghanistan.
