“I was very surprised when I heard that the media was quoting me as saying that if we won the ICC InterContinental Cup we would give the trophy to Kabir Khan”, Afghanistan’s pacer Hamid Hassan said in Nairobi today, “perhaps they had a problem understanding my English.”
“Every member of our national team considers every match we play to be a matter of national honour – and any trophies we win are for our people, and our country. We could not think of giving them away.”
Hassan currently tops the bowling charts of the ICC Intercontinental Cup with 24 wickets from four games. He has played a major part on the field with his bowling.
His comments followed media reports that he had said that of the national team returned home successful from Kenya, they would “gift the winning trophy to their ex-coach.”
Dr Hamid Shinwari, CEO of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, said that Kabir Khan had done a fine job as coach of the national team and would be missed, “but we have no intention of giving him our hard earned trophy. The awards we receive are symbols, not just for the team, but for Afghanistan, for peace and national pride. We have an excellent new coach, Rashid Latif. We believe that his ability, along with the obvious skills of our national team, will lead to continued international success and achievement for Afghanistan cricket in the future.”
